Rebellions of 1837
In the 1830s, some people in Upper and Lower Canada believed that progress toward democracy was too slow.
When armed in-fighting amongst European settlers occurred in 1837-38 in the area outside Montreal and in Toronto, they did not have enough support to succeed.
The rebels were defeated by colonial British troops and their helping volunteers. A number of rebels were hanged or exiled.
Lord "Radical Jack" Durham, a British colonial administrator was sent form Britain to report on the rebellions. He recommended that Upper and Lower Canada be merged and non-English people be assimilated into English-speaking Protestant culture.
